Instructions: You are asked to select values for 13
variables (e.g., "Arrive Office" and "Leave Office" times, lunch duration,
etc.) from the drop down menus and text boxes in the calculator below.
Important Note: Initially you only need to enter values
for variables for Monday, and hit "Calculate" The values selected for
Monday will automatically preset the same values for the rest of the week
(Tuesday through Friday).
However, after making your Monday selections, you have the option of
selecting different values for individual variables on Tuesday, Wednesday,
Thursday and Friday without affecting your selections in any
other drop down menu. In other words, you may, for example,
change the "Arrive Office" time for Tuesday or the "Lunch" duration for
Wednesday without affecting any of your other selections. However, if
you go back and change a value for an individual variable for Monday,
the new value selected will reset the values for that variable for Tuesday
through Friday, and override any different choices you previously made
on those other days.
If you need to clear ALL of your choices at once and start from
scratch, simply refresh your browser window.

1. "Billable Hour Target":
enter the number of hours (e.g., 2000) that your firm requires you to
bill each year. Note: if your firm allows you to include
pro bono time in meeting your target, then simply enter the total target
(which would include all billable and pro bono time). If your firm does
NOT allow you to include pro bono time in meeting your target, you will
need to account for pro bono time as non-billable time under the "Professional
Activities" variable below.
2. "Arrive Office": For Monday, use the drop down menu to select a time for "Arrive Office." This is the time - on average - that you arrive in the office each weekday (you can ignore "Leave Home" time - that will be automatically calculated for you based on the value entered for your morning commute time). Arrive times run from 4:00 A.M. through 1:00 P.M.
3. "Leave Office": For Monday, use the drop down menu to select a time for "Leave Office." This is the time - on average - that you leave the office each weekday (you can ignore "Arrive Home" time - that will be automatically calculated for you based on the value entered for your evening commute time). Arrive times run from 1:30 P.M. through 3:30 A.M (though we certainly hope no one chooses the latter!).
4. "Morning Commute Time": For Monday, use the drop down menu to select a duration for your morning commute (on average).
5. "Evening Commute Time": For Monday, use the drop down menu to select a duration for your evening commute (on average) (note: consider whether this number differs from your morning commute time if you regularly leave the office late - by car service, for example - and there is no traffic).
6. "Lunch Break": For Monday,
use the drop down menu to select a duration for lunch (on average). This
includes time spent eating, but also possibly time taken during lunch
to do shopping, run errands, or hit the gym for a workout. Note: if
you generally work through lunch, leave Monday at zero, and then change
time for any of the other days when you have a regularly scheduled lunch
for administrative or professional matters.
7. "Personal Breaks": For
Monday, use the drop down menu to select a duration for time spent (on
average) on personal affairs during the day. This might include time getting
organized after arriving in the office; personal calls; bathroom breaks;
emailing friends; chat room time; IM time; paying personal bills; browsing
the Internet; reading the daily newspaper (wow, you didn't think you spent
so much time on these, did you?).
Note: if you are not sure about the numbers here (or
for any of the other Nonbillable Activities below), give it your best
guess. For greater precision, you may want to spend a week keeping a
log of your "nonbillable" time, just like you keep track of your billable
time for the firm. Be as precise as possible - literally: if you go to
the bathroom for five minutes, mark it down (just like you'd bill a client
for a five minute phone call). We know this is a pain, but it's only a
week and the knowledge obtained will give you greater insight into how
you spend your day, and thereby help you make better use of your time
in the office.
8. "Professional Activities":
For Monday, use the drop down menu to select a duration for time spent
(on average) on professional activities that are non-billable such as
reading legal periodicals, or bar association work. DO NOT INCLUDE
TIME SPENT ON: (i) pro bono activities if this time is already
captured in the "Billable Hour Target" value entered above, or (ii) time
spent after leaving the office in the evening at things like bar association
functions or networking events; this form is intended to capture only
time spent during the day (however, if for example, you spend lunch
every Wednesday at a bar association event, then you can capture that
here, or under "Lunch Break").
9. "Administrative Activities":
For Monday, use the drop down menu to select a duration for time spent
(on average) on activities related to firm administration such as office
meetings to discuss firm-related matters; candidate interviews; etc.
10. "Dinner": For Monday, use the
drop down menu to select a duration for dinner (on average).
11. "Legal Holidays": The
form assumes 11 legal holidays during the year such as New Year's, July
4th and Thanksgiving. You may change this number if you work through some
of these holidays.
12. "Vacation Days": Enter
the number of vacation days you take each year.
13. "Personal
Days": Enter the number of personal days you take each year.
