It's been said "the law is a jealous mistress." Indeed, practicing attorneys routinely complain that the demands of their profession leave little time for family and personal interests.

Lauren Rikleen and Heidi Brown are both practicing attorneys who have written and spoken extensively on techniques for balancing life and legal practice. In this 60-minute webinar they will discuss techniques for making time for your life outside the law. Lauren will address strategies for partners and other senior counsel, while Heidi will provide guidance to younger associates.

During this 60-minute idea-packed seminar, you'll learn about:
  • Why a lack of "work life balance" is the #1 reason cited by attorneys for leaving their firms for another employer
  • The 6 different types of alternate work arrangements attorneys use to balance family life and work
  • Taming the "billable hour" -- breaking "bad" habits that interfere with personal time
  • Time management skills to help you take back control of your schedule
  • Why 30 minutes at the gym can cut 60 minutes off your workday
  • Why carving out time for family is critical for peak performance
  • For partners: modeling "balance" for younger attorneys
  • For partners: how to establish"family friendly" policies that maximize retention and communicate respect.

Heidi Brown is Of Counsel at Moore & Lee, LLP, a full-service commercial litigation firm with offices in New York, Virginia and Washington D.C.

For over 10 years, Heidi has devoted substantial time to recruiting, training, and mentoring young attorneys. Her 588-page treatise -- Fundamentals of Federal Litigation (West Publishing) -- provides hands-on, practical guidance to new litigators, including a separate appendix for young attorneys on techniques for reducing stress, raising productivity and increasing professional and personal satisfaction. Several law firms have based their new associate training programs on the text.

Heidi provides one-on-one counseling and coaching to young attorneys in legal writing, organization skills, and work-life balance. She offers customized seminars to law firms and corporate counsel on similar topics.

Heidi is the founder of the Washington, D.C., Women's Legal Networking Group, and formerly served as previously served as the President of the Washington, D.C. chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction.

Lauren Stiller Rikleen is a partner at the law firm of Bowditch & Dewey LLP where she practices environmental law and mediation.

Lauren is also a past President of the Boston Bar Association where she created a task force on work family balance. Lauren is currently finishing a book that explores the dynamics affecting the retention of women attorneys at law firms and their advancement to partnership. She is available to consult with law firms and individual attorneys on promotion and retention of women attorneys.

In 2001, Ms. Rikleen received the Athena Award for serving as a positive role model and mentor to women. She was also named the 1997 Business Leader of the Year by the MetroWest Chamber of Commerce and, in 1991, was selected Woman of the Year by the Middlesex News.
